Each performance is a poignant reminder of a promise made by their ancestors to put on the play every decade in return for their lives being spared as the Black Death swept through 17th century Europe to deadly effect. 

Remarkably, no villagers died, while neighbouring communities were devastated. And so, the play has been performed at the turn of each new decade since. One of the play’s key attractions today is how it has remained remarkably true to its roots, with strict adherence to tradition and fixed interpretations of centuries-old manuscripts.
