Founded by the Romans in the 1st century A.D., the northern Italian city of Verona is dotted with pretty palazzi, elegant squares and medieval gems. Architectural remnants of the Roman era are a real draw. Dubbed the 'City of Love' by the city's most famous residents, Romeo and Juliet.
The Arena di Verona is probably the world's most remarkable opera house. Covent Garden, the Sydney Opera, and La Scala may stake their claims, but Verona combines a quite unique setting with electrifying performances from the world's greatest performers. It also helps to have a perfect 2000-year-old Roman amphitheatre in which to stage productions ... evoking an atmosphere like nowhere else.
Five days in Verona, with an included city tour, two performances in the Arena di Verona, a day pottering around the pretty towns and markets of nearby Lake Garda and a tour of a Valpolicella vineyard, sampling the famous wines during a splendid lunch. What more could you ask for?
