Colonised by the Portuguese, Dutch and British, Sri Lanka has an air of the familiar blended with Eastern exotic charm. It is not just sun-kissed beaches and wrinkled elephants but a wealth of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, diverse landscapes from lush tropical vegetation to lakes, mountains and the cooler climates of hill country with a bio diversity that will have nature, bird and animal lovers bubbling with amazement. From the bustling capital of Colombo, unspoilt nature, scenic train rides, the Royal Botanical Gardens, spice markets, colonial charm of hill country, game drives and golden sands of the Indian Ocean - this holiday offers so much. We also visit the Elephant Transit Home run by the Born Free Foundation to witness its great work. Add to this full board, afternoon high teas and evenings of live music; what a way to escape the British climate.
In August, the gathering of up to 600 elephants in the Minneriya National Park is a magical sight! There will also be time to wander at leisure, take a cooling dip and enjoy the colonial history of our hotels and the areas that surround them. The final three days are spent at a luxury beach resort with the possibility to extend your stay to a full week.
