Switzerland for ChristmasExcursions
Berne guided tour
Berne is the capital of both Switzerland and the Bernese Oberland and just an hour’s drive from your resort. Your included walking tour will include the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town and the elaborate Zytglogge, or Time Bell, a Gothic clock tower complete with moving puppets. The city also contains a wealth of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, including the famous 'Ogre Fountain'. After the tour you are free to wander Berne and perhaps visit the home of Einstein, where he wrote his theory of relativity, or the Fine Arts Museum with its fine collection of works by Monet, Picasso, Giacometti and Dalì.
Gruyères and the Simmental Valley (including lunch)
Start with a scenic drive through the Simmental Valley where farming brought riches to the valley. The ornate farmhouses on the hills and in the villages bear witness to this wealth. The gently rolling landscape of Canton Fribourg’s Pays de Gruyère is home to the black and white Fribourg cattle whose milk is made into the tasty Gruyère cheese (Le Gruyère AOC). Visit the medieval traffic-free town of Gruyères, with its walled castle, situated at the centre of this picturesque landscape, nestled between the mountain flanks of the Moléson and Dent du Chamois. Enjoy a traditional fondue lunch in Le Chalet, situated in the heart of the village, with an included drink.
Schilthorn & Piz Gloria
Many scenes were filmed at Piz Gloria for the 1969 James Bond 007 film On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Located on top of Schilthorn, 2,970-metres above Mürren is Blofeld's clinical research institute, and Bond spends some time there, eventually destroying the whole place!
Lake Thun cruise on Christmas Eve
Travel by coach to Interlaken in the shadow of the Jungfrau, where there will be free time to shop and enjoy lunch before it winds down for Christmas. Then in the afternoon enjoy a scenic lake cruise, passing picturesque villages and castles that are steeped in history. Enjoy the vista of the surrounding scenery as you enjoy afternoon tea, coffee and cake washed down with a little schnapps perhaps.
Gornergrat Matterhorn Railway
Starting at an altitude of 1,605 metres and rising to 3,090 metres on the Gornergrat ridge, the railiway passes through forests and a high alpine plateau before reaching the summit. At the summit enjoy an amazing view of the majestic Matterhorn, Monte Rosa massif and the Dufourspitze (4,634 metres), which is the highest peak in Switzerland.
