A FAMILIAR FACE...

My name is Ian and I am half English and half Czech (on my mother’s side). I have dual nationality however I have spent most of my life in the UK.

I am lucky that my parents immersed me in languages from a very early age. I am able to speak the Czech language fluently because my mother spoke to me in Czech when I was growing up and my father spoke to me in English. At the age of 8 I spent a year in Italy at an Italian school and throughout my education I have studied languages (I spent a year in Italy and France) while I was at University.

When I finished University I spent 18 months working in Australia and travelling around South East Asia which really sparked the travel bug within me. It was not long before I found a job that involved lots of travel.

In 2001 at the age of 26 I started working as a Tour Manager for a Swedish Company (taking American School Children around the UK and Europe) and shortly after that I began working for UK based companies taking groups of people (mainly Brits) around the World. In the beginning I did not believe that there was a job out there that would involve going on other people’s holidays with them; since then I have managed tours in many different locations throughout the world including Thailand, USA, Australia, China, Russia, Vietnam, all over Europe, Cambodia (the list goes on).

There was one particular area however that kept pulling me back and that was the place where half my roots are from...the Czech Republic. Although I have always worked in many different locations throughout the world I have always specialised in Eastern Europe and that is where I have always felt the most comfortable.

During the 7 years I have worked as an International Tour Manager I have shared many experiences with many different people and many different groups of individuals and I have learned many things; in particular that you never stop learning about people. Everyone is different and people like to be treated as individuals.

I have enjoyed doing the job so much that it has never felt like a job to me...more of a hobby which I got paid for.

I believe that I know what people want from a good holiday and having spent 7 years escorting people on their holidays I have learned what works and what does not work; and at the end of the day everyone wants to have fun on their holidays and that is firmly what One Traveller is about...having fun.
