    Description

Carnivals in Italy are huge winter festivals, usually complete with masks, parades, music and parties and are as popular now as they were in the medieval period, with thousands of Italians flocking to see them as well as visitors from all over the world. From our base in Verona we will enjoy the city and its carnival which dates from 1531 and is one of the oldest in Italy. Today it continues to engage the population of Verona in a passionate and lively way.

Then we discover the Venice carnival, first held in 1162 when it consisted of over two months of revelry. It was revived in 1979 with great success and nowadays locals don masks and costumes and parade around the city, enjoying the live music in the main squares, a wonderful open-air festival where everyone can join in. Fantastic costumes are displayed in St Mark's Square and Venice is the perfect backdrop for amazing photographs.

We will also have time to discover Estense Castle with its imposing castle walls; Sirmione, one of the most picturesque towns on Lake Garda; and then the finale is the Carnival of Cento. This carnival dates from 1615 and the float parades begin in the historic centre, accompanied by music and dancing figures in masks.
