The world-renowned Oberammergau Passion Play is set to return for its 42nd performance from May – October 2020.

About The Oberammergau Passion Play
As the black plague raged through the region in 1633, residents of Oberammergau, Bavaria, Germany vowed that if God spared them from the disease, they would produce a play thereafter for all time depicting the life and death of Jesus.

Incredibly, no more lives were claimed as a result of the plague, and therefore in 1634, the first Passion play took place. Ever since, the villagers have continued to perform over the course of five months every ten years – with the next performance to be held in 2020.

Involving over 2,000 performers, musicians, stage technicians and all the residents from the Oberammergau village, the performance is highly regarded around the world. The Passion Play performance follows Jesus from his entry into Jerusalem through to his crucifixion and ascension.

In preparation for the performance, all performers grow their hair, women defer marriage and men let their beards grow in order for them to look authentic during the performance.

The Passion Play Theatre
The Oberammergau Passion Play is performed 5-days per week in a large, purpose-built open-air theatre and is expected to attract over 750,000 visitors during its 2020 performance.

Running from May through to October, the performance is split into two halves with an evening meal included in-between.
