AN INTRODUCTION TO PRAGUE...
The Czech Republic is a beautiful country with so much to offer; from mountains to stunning countryside to quaint little villages with Castles (Karlstejn) to beautiful Spa Towns (Karlovy Vary) to cities that have been undamaged by Wars (Prague). It is also a country that has suffered incredibly at the hands of the Hapsburgs, later in the hands of the Nazis and most recently the Communists. Until 15 years ago it was very much overlooked as a tourist destination however since the collapse of Communism in 1989 more and more people have been discovering this gem.
In the heart of the Czech Republic is possibly the most stunning City in Europe... Prague.
Prague
Prague was virtually untouched by World War II. Even under the Communists the City remained undamaged which makes it a perfectly well preserved medieval Capital. The buildings that exist today in the City Centre are the same buildings that existed hundreds of years ago.
Finding your way around Prague’s pedestrianised centre is remarkably easy and it is like being in a time warp. From the Old Town Square in 10 minutes by foot you can reach the Wenceslas Square, 10 minutes in another direction would bring you out at the Charles Bridge and 10 minutes in yet another direction would bring you out at the Jewish Quarter. The beautiful River Vltava runs through Prague and under the Charles Bridge (the Oldest Bridge in the city). Prague also boasts the World’s largest Medieval Castle which definitely has to be visited (and is included in the One Traveller tour)
Most visitors to the country only visit Prague and as impressive as it is they miss out on the rest of this beautiful country. One Traveller intends to show you, during your 6 day tour, not only Prague but 2 further beautiful towns in the Czech Republic which are easy to access while using Prague as the base;
Karlstejn and its Castle
Karlstejn Castle was founded by Charles IV in 1348 as a Royal hideaway and a treasury for the Crown Jewels and his Holy Relics. It is perched on a Crag above the River Beroun and is perhaps the most photogenic Castle in the Czech Republic. The Castle is in good shape and the Village of Karlstejn is also well worth a visit especially for the shopping (Bohemia Crystal) and eating. It is amazing how cheap things become as soon as you get outside of the city centre. A day trip to this beautiful village with a guided tour of the Castle is included in our tour.
Karlovy Vary
Karlovy Vary sometimes known in English as Carlsbad, is a spa city situated in Bohemia, the western part of the Czech Republic, on the confluence of the rivers Ohre and Teplá. Carlsbad is named after the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV, who founded the city in 1370. It is famous for its hot springs (13 main springs, about 300 smaller springs, and the warm-water Teplá River). A visit here really puts it into perspective just how varied this country is. One Traveller is including a trip to this beautiful City. You can even drink the water that is said to have all the healing properties and the secret of eternal youth.
