Day 1 – Fly to St. Petersburg
Fly to St. Petersburg on Scheduled British Airways flights from London Heathrow
You will meet your Tour Manager before you check-in at Heathrow and board the airplane.
On arrival at St. Petersburg your Tour Manager will organise the onward Coach transport from the airport across to the hotel where 5 nights’ 4 star accommodation has been reserved for you. As this is the arrival day it is important to have an orientation of the central area after which we shall have a welcome drink followed a lovely dinner in our hotel.
Day 2 - Included Full Day. Guided City tour, Peter & Paul Fortress & Alexander Nevsky Cemetery
Morning: Our comprehensive City tour by coach will take in all the highlights of St. Petersburg. We will see such sights as the Peter and Paul Fortress, the Church on the Spilled Blood, St Isaac’s Cathedral, Kazan Cathedral, the Winter Palace and the amazing Nevsky Prospect. We will also take you to see the burial site of the Romanov Royal family at the Peter & Paul Fortress.
PM. After a spot of lunch we will continue on our included tour to the Alexander Nevsky Cemetery where some of the giants of Russian culture, including Tchaikovsky, Dostoevsky, and Glinka are buried.
This evening we will have dinner as a group in a local St. Petersburg restaurant.
Day 3 – Included State Hermitage Museum
Morning: The State Hermitage occupies six magnificent buildings situated along the embankment of the River Neva, right in the heart of St Petersburg. We will spend the morning being guided around the museum looking at the most famous and interesting pieces. Part of the State Hermitage is the Winter Palace, the residence of the Russian Tsars that was built to the design of Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli in 1754-62.
Afternoon: Free to either explore the Hermitage further on your own or to explore the Nevsky Prospekt (just a few minutes away from our hotel)
This evening you will have the opportunity to enjoy a delicious Russian meal followed by a spectacular Cossack show.
Day 4 – Optional Full Day to Pushkin and Pavlosk (2 Palaces)
The Russian Royal family (The Romanov’s) were probably the richest Royal family that ever lived. Catherine’s Palace was used by the Tsars up until 1917! The Germans destroyed it in WWII and since then it has been painstakingly rebuilt to every last detail. It is spectacular. Amongst the rooms in Catherine’s Palace are: The World famous Amber Room (there are Amber/Jasper Mosaics, wood carvings and exquisitely engraved Amber panels). Other rooms include the Picture Gallery and the Crimson Room. A stroll in the grounds afterwards makes for a great day out.
After lunch we will continue onto Pavlosk. Pavlovsk is well worth visiting both for the treasures in the elegant palace and for the charming, rambling park, which is one of the largest and finest English-style landscape gardens outside the UK.
Dinner this evening will be included in a charming restaurant in the Centre of St. Petersburg.
Day 5 - Optional Full Day to see St. Isaacs Cathedral & Yusupov Palace
After a nice breakfast in the hotel we will visit the St. Isaac’s Cathedral. The dome of the Cathedral dominates the skyline of St. Petersburg and its gilded cupola can be seen glistening from all over the city. The church itself is an architectural marvel. Built by the French-born architect Auguste Montferrand to be the main church of the Russian Empire, the cathedral was under construction for 40 years (1818-1858), and was decorated in the most elaborate way possible.
Then after a break for lunch we will head to the Yusupov Palace.
The Yusupov Palace is located on a quiet stretch of the Moika River. This long yellow building once was a residence of the wealthy and respected Yusupov family and saw one of Russian history's moments of high drama - the murder of Grigory Rasputin, a peasant who had gained control over the tsar's family through his alleged supernatural powers.
This evening we will have our farewell meal in the hotel.
Day 6 – Included Peterhof (Peter the Greats Summer Palace) followed by our return flight to the UK.
As our British Airways flight to the UK does not depart until the late afternoon we have the day at our leisure and One Traveller will take you to see "The Russian Versailles". Peterhof is an immensely luxurious and beautifully preserved Imperial estate, founded in 1710 by Peter the Great on the shore of the Gulf of Finland (Baltic Sea). It combines several ornate palaces, a number of beautifully landscaped parks and a dazzling array of magnificent statues and fountains.
After our tour we will have some free time before heading to the airport for our British Airways Scheduled flight back to London Heathrow
